The main image appears in Amazon search results and is an important part of how a product is presented. Its requirements differ from those for additional images. The current rules for the relevant marketplace and product category take precedence. A white background, a clear view of the product actually offered and no added promotional graphics are central checks. Following image requirements does not guarantee a particular click-through rate, conversion rate or sales volume.
Checklist for your Main Image
- Background: In general, use a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), unless the relevant category specifies a different requirement. Check the exported file rather than relying only on the image editor preview.
- Representation: Show the actual product clearly and in full. Amazon lists a product occupying at least 85% of the frame as a basic requirement. Check category-specific rules and avoid props that suggest an incorrect scope of delivery.
- No Additions: Do not add promotional text, watermarks, borders or graphic certification overlays. Distinguish wording physically present on the real product from elements inserted into the photograph afterwards.
- Technical Specifications: Amazon lists JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF formats. It prefers images larger than 1,000 pixels on each side for zoom. The requirements shown for the relevant upload remain decisive.
- Categories: Some products, including clothing, have additional requirements for models, presentation or framing. Consult the relevant category guidance rather than applying a generic template to every product.
Avoiding Typical Errors
Promotional design and technical requirements need separate checks. Non-compliant images may be removed or cause display problems. This does not mean that every error is detected automatically or necessarily leads to loss of the Buy Box. Check the file and then the actual listing display.
- Promotional Overlays: Extra promotional messages or artificial graphic elements do not belong on the main image. Wording physically present on the product must be distinguished from these additions.
- Amazon Badges: Do not insert Amazon programme or marketplace badges such as Amazon's Choice or Bestseller into your own product images. A platform designation is not permission to reproduce its badge.
- Props: Avoid objects that imply the customer will receive items not included in the offer. Product presentation must match the actual scope of delivery.
- Image Order: After uploading, verify which image is actually displayed as the main image. Check incorrect associations in your image set; if an image is rejected, use the specific Seller Central message to investigate.
Background: Why Amazon Audits So Strictly
The rules aim to support consistent, understandable product presentation. Customers should be able to identify the actual item and what is included in the offer. Background, framing and added elements are separate requirements: a correct white background alone does not make an image compliant. Before uploading, review the current Seller Central requirements; afterwards, check the preview and the published display. Also check category exceptions and whether the result is clear on desktop and mobile devices. Keeping the file version, upload date and any rejection message makes later investigation easier.
Additional images and A+ Content are not blanket permission to use seals, customer reviews or promotional promises. These areas have their own content rules. A product inspection or seal does not replace Amazon's approval. Our Amazon Consulting can support review of an image series and listing structure. The inspection procedure explains the scope of our product examination. No particular increase in sales or conversion is guaranteed by this service.
