Using Test Reports and Quality Seals in Amazon Listings

How to objectively place test results in your listing and where the informative value of seals ends.

A test report and quality seal can be placed in an Amazon listing wherever claims are made regarding material, workmanship, or durability: in bullet points, product descriptions, additional product images, A+ content, and on the packaging. The prerequisite is that every claim is covered by the actual test result and that there is a reference to the test report or a QR verification. The seal confirms exclusively the tested product, the tested variant, and the time of testing. It does not replace legal requirements such as CE marking, GPSR requirements, LUCID registration, or WEEE directives, and is not an official approval. Before implementation, the current image and content guidelines of the respective marketplace must be checked.

How to use test reports and seals

The following work steps should be followed sequentially before making a seal or test report publicly visible:

  1. Clarify the scope of testing: First, document in writing which properties were actually examined through the testing procedure, such as material composition, workmanship, or durability under defined test conditions. Only this documented scope may be communicated in the listing.

  2. Limit claims: Formulate product claims in bullet points, descriptions, and A+ content strictly within the scope of what the test report actually verifies. Avoid blanket quality statements without a direct link to the test result, as well as wording that goes beyond the tested scope.

  3. Choose placement: Integrate the seal into additional product images, A+ content, product descriptions, and on the packaging, always in close proximity to the claim it supports. This ensures customers can identify which specific property the test refers to.

  4. Enable verification: Reference the complete test report and, if available, provide a QR verification so customers can independently view the test date, the tested variant, and the scope of testing.

  5. Ensure currency: Regularly check whether the product, material, or manufacturing process has changed since the last test, and if necessary, initiate a new test via appropriate product tests before continuing to use the existing seal.

Limits and obligations

Before implementation, the following points must be checked and continuously observed:

  • The seal confirms exclusively the tested product, the tested variant, and the time of testing – not later batches or different variants.
  • It is not proof of legal conformity and does not replace CE marking, GPSR requirements, LUCID registration, or WEEE obligations.
  • It does not constitute an official approval and must not be presented as such.
  • Validity is time-limited; if changes are made to the product, material, or manufacturing process, the seal loses its informative value and must be removed.
  • Current marketplace image and content guidelines must be checked before each integration as requirements may change.
  • Seal documentation does not belong in areas with legally required mandatory information, such as safety or warning notices.

Common errors

In practice, recurring errors occur: seals are placed without a recognizable link to the actual test scope, leaving customers unable to see which specific property was verified. Frequently, the seal is also presented as a substitute for CE or GPSR marking, even though it does not cover these obligations. Another mistake is continuing to use the seal unchanged after a product modification without arranging for re-testing. Often, a comprehensible reference to the test report or a verification option is missing, rendering the claim unverifiable for customers. Furthermore, placement within areas designated for legally required information, such as safety notices, is inappropriate and should be avoided.

Background

Test reports and seals document a defined testing procedure at a specific point in time on a specific product sample. This documentation helps retailers provide verifiable and objective evidence for claims regarding material, workmanship, or durability, without allowing conclusions to be drawn about future sales or customer behavior. The value of a seal lies in its traceability, not in any promotional effect beyond that.

Conclusion

A test report and a base seal are evidence of a concrete, completed testing procedure, not a blanket quality guarantee. Retailers should consistently limit their use in listings to the actual scope of testing and separately and regularly check applicable market and legal requirements. As an independent institute, HANSE-CERT conducts relevant product tests and provides the associated documentation. Anyone requiring a current evaluation of their product should initiate a product test.
